Where StatusCake is better
- Free monitor count. Their free tier is large and has been for years. If raw monitor count is the constraint, take it.
- Checking locations. Many test locations, including on the free plan. We check from one region.
- Page speed and domain tooling. They bundle page-speed tests and domain monitoring into the same account.
Where we are better
- Alerts that reach you. StatusCake's free alerting is email, and SMS is metered on paid plans. We send WhatsApp, Slack, Teams and Discord with email always underneath.
- Confirmation before alerting. A failed check becomes a suspect and is rechecked before anyone is woken. One bad packet is not an incident, and a monitor that cries wolf is one you stop reading.
- Cron heartbeats on the free plan. Scheduled jobs that silently stop running are the outage nobody notices for a week.
- Client reports. A monthly page you can forward to whoever is paying you to keep the site up.
- API checks with real assertions. Bearer tokens, a JSON path, and a response-time limit.
The honest summary
If you want the largest number of free monitors and email alerts are fine, StatusCake is a reasonable answer. If the cost of being told late is a client noticing first, the question is not how many things you can watch — it is how fast you find out about the one that broke.
